Birdcage

This video features a clip showing how soldiers played a game called "Birdcage" during the American Civil War. The game, also known as "Chuck-a-Luck," involved betting on the outcome of rolling three dice. Players would place their bets on a board with various options, such as betting on a specific number or a combination of numbers. The dice were rolled inside a cage-like device (or dicecup), and players would win or lose based on the results of the roll.

It was called 'Sweat' or 'Sweat Rag' because the numbers were drawn on a rag, a sweat rag, and when an officer came the wise guy folded it up, wiped his brow and tucked it safely away out of sight while tossing the dice. (You could be flogged for gambling in that army.)
