In the programming world, languages are either 'compiled' or 'interpreted.' Interpreted languages run a program line by line until a problem is encountered and then 'crash.' These crashes are often caused by what are called 'bugs:' pieces of logic that cause glitches in software.
On the other hand, compiled languages, like Java, are pre-processed by a ' compiler' before they are ever executed. They will not 'run' at all until all syntactical issues are addressed. While annoying, this is better than catching a bug before it is too late.
