Topographical Maps

3D Math on a 2D plane

Imagine a standard mathematical plane with an x and a y axis like you find in Algebra class. In this app, we assign a height to each (x,y) using an 'elevation' function.

By scanning each ordered pair in the plane and finding its associated height, we can find the highest and lowest elevation points in the map. Then we can apply a color assignment to all points, based on their elevations, using the magic of 'linear regression'. A plot of the (x,y)s with their associated elevation colors gives us a 'TopoMap!'

If you look at the source code, you see a hefty use of linear regression and color transformations.

Features:

  • Use the selection menu to choose a design
  • Various color designs are utilized; in 'Color Picking' use the Bootstrap 5 color pickers to alter the color mapping
  • Hovering the mouse over the canvas will show topomap elevation info in the summary table
  • Left-mouse-click the canvas to show/hide a grid
